Using Dart MCP Server to improve your development workflow | Mobile Development | Brett Morgan | The Dart & Flutter team introduced a Model Context Protocol server to aid in development of Dart and Flutter code. This talk will show you how to take advantage of MCP to improve how you develop your code using Gemini CLI to automate your workflows. |
Let's Brew KMP: Shared Code & Shared Coffees | Mobile Development | Katie Barnett | Take the first steps into the exciting world of Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP)! This talk is designed for multiplatform-curious developers who love a native experience but don't want to be limited to just one platform. We'll embark on a practical journey together by building a simple group coffee ordering application. You'll see firsthand how KMP allows us to write business logic once and deploy it to multiple targets, making development more efficient and consistent. Our coffee order includes: - What you need to get set up: Kickstart your KMP development environment - KMP vs. Native Android Development: Exploring the key differences and similarities, highlighting where KMP shines and how it integrates with existing Android practices. - Lessons Learned Along the Way: What has tripped me up in this new way of thinking! |
Metrics, measurements, and migrations; how to effectively manage tech debt at scale | Software Practices | Isaac Udy | Tech debt is tricky. It's often hard to define, hard to measure, and can be hard to find time to work on. Tech debt is good at hiding in large projects and can be easy to forget about. Isaac is the Android Platform Lead for ANZ Plus, which has a team of over 70 engineers, and a codebase that's growing at over 150,000 lines of production code per-year. He has also spent a lot of time thinking about tech debt, and how it can be managed in such a large team. In this session, Isaac will discuss: * How the ANZ Plus Android team manages tech debt at scale * How the ANZ Plus Android team's approach to tech debt has changed over time * How to make use of metrics and measurements to quantify tech debt to non-technical stakeholders |
Think like an Athlete, Build like a Champion | Software Practices | Mikey Stewart | This talk will explore interesting parallels between high-performance sport and the craft of software engineering, drawing directly from my own experiences as a senior engineer and a former New Zealand representative and champion. You'll leave with a fresh perspective on engineering practices and gain practical tips to help you and your team build like a champion. |
Redstone vs. Diamond: Balancing Cost, Complexity & Power on Google Cloud | Cloud | Anupam Phoghat | Using a story-based approach, we'll experience key lessons via failure and success while choosing between Cloud Run, GKE, and Vertex AI to deploy agents. Cloud Run is Redstone: Common, simple to use, and incredibly efficient for specific, automated tasks (like a simple webhook). GKE is a Diamond Pickaxe: It requires more 'investment' to craft (i.e., more learning and setup), but it's the powerful, durable tool you need for the big, tough jobs (like running your main game server). Vertex AI is an Enchanting Table: A specialised, high-powered tool that you bring in to add magical abilities (AI features) to your existing tools. It's not for mining, but for making your mining better! |
